Jack Nowell, the Exeter Chiefs winger, has announced that he will not make himself available for England’s World Cup squad. Despite winning 46 caps and participating in the last two World Cups, Nowell has decided to prioritise his health and wellbeing, given he has been managing a knee injury and has only played in the Heineken Champions Cup for Exeter since the end of March. Moving to La Rochelle this summer, he will spend time in his native Cornwall before joining the French club.
‘No World Cup, I’m not doing the World Cup. I am just going to chill,’ Nowell told the RugbyPass Offload podcast. His decision means that his England career will effectively come to a close as players plying their trade overseas are not considered for Test duty.
