Indian cough syrup child deaths, to be tested before export

In some countries, there have been reports of infant deaths from consumption of Indian cough syrup. Due to this, India also stopped the production of a company’s medicine. The World Health Organization issued a warning stating that these Indian syrups are not up to standard.

This time, considering the international response, the Indian government has introduced mandatory testing rules before exporting cough syrup.

From next June 1st, the government laboratory will have to take the certificate through data analysis of the drug data. Only then the medicine can be exported from India abroad.
India changed its drug policy following a months-long review after reports of several children dying after consuming Indian cough syrup in Gambia and Uzbekistan.

Director General of India’s Foreign Trade Department said in a statement that cough syrup must be tested before export.
